From USA Today bestselling author Meghan March comes the final sexy standalone set in the Beneath world of New Orleans.

I used to believe there were lines in life you don't cross.
Don't lie. Don't cheat. Don't steal.
Until I learned people don't always practice what they preach.
I turned in my badge and gun and walked away from everything.
Then I got the call no one wants, and I’m back in New Orleans.
What I don't expect is for her to be here too.
Another line you don’t cross?
Don't touch your best friend’s little sister.
She's always been off-limits.

Too bad I don't follow the rules anymore.

This review is going to be vague because there are just so many things that could be spoilers. This is the seventh and final  book in the Beneath series, but this is the first one I have read. I can assure you that is can be read as a complete stand alone, but fans of the series will enjoy cameos from other characters and will have met Rhett Hennessey in other books. But the author does a good job explaining anything pertinent so I never felt lost. I was pulled right into this story and was enthralled til the very end.

Rhett Hennessey is just all kind of alpha deliciousness. He has basically been off the grid and living in denial after his life imploded a year ago and made him question everything. But now he has returned home to New Orleans and is trying to solve a case close to home...off the books since he is no longer a police detective. He has always lived by a code of honor and had a strong sense of loyalty. But black and white has morphed into more shades of gray lately. He's been detached, lost, and avoiding things for a year. But in facing this new situation, he decides to take some sage advice about figuring out what he wants in his own life. With a new dedication to get out of limbo, he sets his sights on the one woman he has always wanted but always saw as off limits.

His heroine is highly intelligent and successful, but also nerdy, awkward, and impulsive. She is real and unfiltered, but can also be professional and classy.  She does not always follow the rules, but she can also get results. She has always had a crush on him, but always felt insecure and invisible. And no matter how successful she is, when around Rhett she feels like that awkward teen again.  He feels like she might be out of his league now, but that is not going to stop him now that he has made up his mind.

I loved these two together! They have a history and chemistry. They have great flirty banter and sexual innuendo.  He is a dirty talker and she is unfiltered. They are passionate and ravenous. They have buried feelings for a long time thinking it was off limits, but now they are trying to take a chance and really embrace life. They are surrounded by mystery, chaos, danger, and unanswered questions. Their lives are messy and complicated. It is hard to tell who to trust, what is the truth, and where threats are coming from. He needs answers about the past and the present. And now she could be in danger and in need of protection. Not only does he need to keep her safe, but he needs to figure out who is out to get them and how all of the pieces fit together. The story is intricately layered with many variables and possible motives and antagonists.

This is intriguing, suspenseful, and mysterious, but also emotional, sexy, funny, and even sweet. Meghan March does not pull punches. It is edgy, violent, and raw at times. It kept me guessing and trying to put it all together. It was full of surprises, twists, and connections. I liked that there was not a lot of unnecessary relationship angst. They had apparently been in denial for years and had enough external drama and danger to deal with. And they were both working through personal issues that affected them and trying to find answers, forgiveness, acceptance, and learn not to take responsibility for other's actions. So it was a personal growth experience for both of them as they worked on building a relationship while trying to keep themselves and those they care about safe.

This ties up her Beneath series. There are cameos of the other couples, and it made me want to go back and read more about them. One intriguing, important man is featured and he will be the hero or perhaps anti-hero of his own upcoming story. I also enjoyed the Hennessey brothers, Rome and Rock. I would love to see more with them. So hopefully, even though this series is complete, there will still be stories spinning off and we may see these characters again.

Rhett Hennessy questions everything he once knew. Leaving New Orleans was not an easy decision to make, but it is time to go back and find some answers. His firm belief in right and wrong has been shaken to the core and the gray areas he finds leave him questioning much about his beliefs. But what he doesn’t question is the feelings he has long tamped down for his best friends’ sister.

Ariel Sampson has harbored a crush on Rhett for as long as she can remember. It was the worst kept secret and she knows it. But she thinks she has a handle on it now that they are all grown up and he is back in town.

These two have a history that sets the foundation for who they are as adults. The chemistry between them is such that it’s hard to believe Ariel had not noticed Rhett’s attraction to her earlier. But despite her sass, she has some insecurities that hinder her view of herself and how others see her. Rhett is both the perfect gentleman and an alpha protector. We’ve seen his swoony side before, but seeing it again, pointed at the right woman was perfection.

I loved watching them work together, and watching them banter. They can do both with ease, and even though they hadn’t seen each other in a while, they fell back into the easy friendship they once had easily.

The twists and turns this story took kept me turning pages long after I should have stopped for reality. This final Beneath story has a lot to tie up, even loose ends I didn’t know I should be looking for.

Finishing this book made me want to go back and do a series reread, because I love the little glimpse of each couple in the epilogue. This is the best series ending I can’t think of for Beneath, both for those who are longtime fans and those who have picked this book up as the first. Beneath The Truth stands alone, and readers can enjoy it on it’s own, but I’d bet that once they meet this group they will want more!

Meghan March has been known to wear camo face paint and tromp around in woods wearing mud-covered boots, all while sporting a perfect manicure. She's also impulsive, easily entertained, and absolutely unapologetic about the fact that she loves to read and write smut. Her past lives include slinging auto parts, selling lingerie, making custom jewelry, and practicing corporate law. Writing books about dirty talking alpha males and the strong, sassy women who bring them to their knees is by far the most fabulous job she's ever had.
